Quick verdict

The BonFeu BonBowl Pro is a deep, rounded 3mm Corten steel fire bowl, 33cm to 53cm tall, about twice the height of the standard BonBowl at the same diameter. It comes in 3 sizes, 60cm, 80cm and 100cm (£139.50 to £349.50), burns wood and weathers to a rust-brown finish outdoors with no painting needed. It is heavier than the other BonBowls at every size and has no handles, so it is built to stay where you put it.

  • Overview:
    • The BonFeu BonBowl Pro is a deep, rounded Corten steel fire bowl for burning wood, a taller take on the BonBowl in 3 diameters: 60cm, 80cm and 100cm.
  • Design & Build:
    • Made from 3mm thick Corten steel, a weatherproof steel alloy. The rust-coloured oxide layer that forms on the surface is dense enough to protect the steel underneath and slow further corrosion, so it never needs painting.
    • The rounded body sits on a sturdy base for stability, with BonFeu's decorative cut-out logo inside the rim. Overall height is 33cm on the 60cm bowl, 43cm on the 80cm and 53cm on the 100cm.
  • What it does well:
    • At every diameter the Pro stands about twice as tall as the standard BonBowl, so the bowl holds more wood and a deeper fire in the same footprint. The shape suits modern and classic gardens alike.
    • Burns wood.
  • Trade-off worth knowing:
    • It is heavier than both the BonBowl and the BonBowl Plus at every size (11kg, 20kg and 39kg), and it has no legs or handles, so this is a bowl you position once. Corten also leaves rust runoff on pale paving while it weathers, so stand it on gravel, a plinth or a heat mat.

BonBowl Pro questions, answered

What is the difference between the BonBowl Pro, the BonBowl and the BonBowl Plus?+

All 3 are 3mm Corten steel bowls that burn wood. The Pro is the tall one: 33cm high at 60cm across, 43cm high at 80cm across, 53cm high at 100cm across, against 17cm, 21cm, 25cm for the BonBowl at the same diameters. It is also heavier at every size (11kg, 20kg, 39kg against 8.6kg, 13.9kg, 23.4kg for the BonBowl). The BonBowl is cheaper at every size and goes up to 150cm. The BonBowl Plus adds integrated legs and handles for moving it and tops out at 100cm. The Pro sits on a base ring instead, with neither legs nor handles.

What should I burn in the BonBowl Pro?+

Wood. BonFeu lists wood as the fuel for the BonBowl Pro. Dry, well-seasoned logs burn cleanest, and damp or treated wood smokes badly and is best kept out of any fire bowl.

Can I use the BonBowl Pro in a UK smoke control area?+

Yes. It's a standalone outdoor fire bowl, and the Clean Air Act's smoke control rules only tighten for fires flued into a building, a summerhouse chimney for example. Burn Ready to Burn certified, or otherwise well-seasoned and properly dried, logs and it is fine to use on any UK postcode, smoke control area or not. Excessive smoke from any fire can still count as a statutory nuisance if it genuinely bothers neighbours, so dry wood matters either way.

How is the BonBowl Pro delivered, and will I need help placing it?+

Free UK mainland delivery, next working day if you order before 12pm on a weekday. Weight depends on size: from 11kg on the 60cm (one person can carry it into place without help) up to 39kg on the 100cm (plan on two people for the last stretch from the pallet to its final spot). The bowl has no handles, so have a second person on hand for the 80cm and 100cm sizes.

Will the BonBowl Pro's Corten steel need any looking after?+

Not really. Corten is a weatherproof steel that builds its own rust-coloured oxide layer outdoors, and BonFeu states the material never needs painting. The finish keeps changing as it weathers, so expect the colour to shift over the first seasons rather than stay exactly as it arrives.

Does rust from the BonBowl Pro stain the paving underneath?+

It can, especially while the surface is still weathering and rain carries a little rust runoff off the bowl. If you have pale paving or decking, standing the bowl on gravel, a plinth or a heat mat avoids staining as well as protecting the surface from heat.

Is the BonBowl Pro a fire pit or an outdoor fireplace, and which is better for a UK garden?+

An outdoor fireplace and a fire pit are not interchangeable. The BonBowl Pro is the fire pit side of that choice: it sits low and open with no flue, radiating heat in every direction so people can sit all the way round it. An outdoor fireplace instead stands upright with a stove pipe, throwing heat forward from a single opening. Choose a fire pit when the fire itself should be the centre of the circle, not to one side of it.

Who the BonBowl Pro is for

It is a good fit if:

  • You want a deeper, taller bowl than the standard BonBowl, holding more wood and a deeper fire in the same footprint.
  • You like the look of a rounded Corten bowl and want it to read as a feature even when unlit.
  • You want a choice of 3 sizes, 60cm for a small patio up to 100cm for entertaining.

Consider something else if:

  • You want to move the bowl around the garden: at 11kg to 39kg with no handles, the BonBowl Plus with integrated handles is the easier one to relocate.
  • You want a size above 100cm: the BonBowl goes up to 150cm.
  • You prefer a low-profile bowl that sits close to the ground: the BonBowl is only 17cm to 37cm tall.

How the BonBowl Pro compares to our other BonBowls

The BonBowl Plus adds integrated legs and handles. The BonBowl Pro is the deep, rounded one: at each diameter it is taller and heavier than either of the others.
