Match the cooking style to your actual entertaining habit

Most buyers default to a gas BBQ because it is what they grew up with, then realise two seasons later that they cook from it once a fortnight rather than the four-times-a-week they imagined. The honest matching exercise is to ask: how often do you actually entertain outdoors, and what do you cook?

If the answer is weeknight burgers and chops for the family, a gas BBQ is the right tool. The Lifestyle Dominica 5-1 and the Enders Kansas Pro 3 SIK are the two go-to entries.

If the answer is weekend cooking with friends, smoke flavour matters, look at the wood and charcoal range. The Lifestyle Dragon Egg ceramic kamado retains heat for hours and doubles as a smoker; the Big Horn Pellet Smoker automates the temperature control that traditional smokers require constant attention for.

If the answer is the weekly Friday pizza ritual, the dedicated pizza oven collection is the right next step. The Igneus Classico is the standard family choice; the Verona Alfresco gas oven is the budget entry; the Clementi Original Dual Fuel Starter Bundle is the most flexible piece in the catalogue.

If the answer is dining-around-the-fire is the whole point of entertaining, you want a combined fire-pit-and-grill or a plancha station. The BonFeu BonBiza Island and the Adezz Damm are the two flagship pieces.

We've found that most customers eventually own two of these formats: a quick gas BBQ for the week, plus a slower wood-fired piece (pizza oven or fire-pit grill) for weekends. Buying both at once is rarely the right move. Start with the one that matches your most frequent cooking, then add the second piece a season or two later.

Still unsure? The honest rule of thumb is: if outdoor cooking is mainly about feeding the family on a Tuesday, start with a gas BBQ. If it is about hosting friends on a Saturday, start with a pizza oven or a combined fire-pit-and-grill. Use the chat in the corner and we will help you pick.

Heat sources and fuel sourcing in the UK

Gas BBQs and gas pizza ovens run on either a propane refill cylinder (a 13 kg cylinder lasts roughly 15-30 hours of cooking depending on output, around £35-45 to refill in 2026) or a natural gas connection from a Gas Safe-registered engineer. Most pieces in this collection ship LPG-ready with conversion to natural gas available as an optional kit. Charcoal BBQs use lumpwood charcoal or briquettes; lumpwood lights faster but burns hotter and shorter, briquettes are steadier. Wood-fired ovens and fire-pit grills want kiln-dried hardwood (oak, ash, beech) at under 20% moisture for the cleanest burn. Avoid softwoods like pine. Pellet smokers use compressed hardwood pellets sold by flavour (hickory, apple, cherry, mesquite); a 9 kg bag lasts roughly 15-20 hours of smoking.

UK Smoke Control Areas

Charcoal BBQs and wood-fired ovens both produce smoke. If you live in a designated Smoke Control Area under the Clean Air Act 1993, you can only burn smokeless fuel in non-DEFRA-approved appliances. Gas BBQs, gas pizza ovens, electric grills and pellet smokers are unaffected. Wood-fired pizza ovens and traditional charcoal BBQs need either an exemption (some council areas permit them for occasional use) or smokeless fuel. Give us your postcode in the chat if you are unsure.
