An indoor fireplace is a domestic fire feature designed for use inside the home, with options that range from traditional gas fires to flueless bioethanol burners and water vapour fireplaces that produce a realistic flame effect with no real combustion. The right choice depends on whether you have a chimney, how much heat you actually want and how much ventilation the room offers.

The three main types of indoor fireplace
Bioethanol fireplaces burn a clean liquid biofuel with no smoke and no chimney, which means they can be installed in flats and modern homes without a flue. Gas indoor fireplaces give the highest heat output and the most authentic flame, but require a flue and professional installation by a Gas Safe engineer. Water vapour fireplaces use ultrasonic mist and LED lighting to mimic a real flame, with zero combustion, which suits homes with children, pets or strict ventilation requirements.
Wall-mounted, freestanding or built-in
Wall-mounted indoor fireplaces sit flush like a flat-screen TV and suit a contemporary living room. Freestanding indoor fireplaces work as a movable focal point in any room with adequate ventilation. Built-in models are integrated into a chimney breast or media wall during refurbishment and give the cleanest finished look.
Materials and finishes
The indoor fireplace range covers powder-coated steel, glass, brushed stainless steel and stone-effect facias. Each is chosen to coexist with a modern or transitional interior rather than dominate it. Product pages list installed dimensions, heat output and ventilation requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Do bioethanol fireplaces need a chimney?
No. Bioethanol burns cleanly into water vapour and carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. The room does need adequate ventilation, typically a window that can open and air bricks where present.
How much heat does an indoor fireplace produce?
It varies. A bioethanol fireplace gives 2 to 3 kW, enough to warm a small living room. A gas indoor fireplace produces 4 to 7 kW, more than a typical radiator. Water vapour fireplaces produce no real heat, only flame effect.
Are water vapour fireplaces safe with children and pets?
Yes. The flame is an optical effect created by water mist and LED, with no actual heat, no fire and no fumes. The water reservoir is cold and the unit is touch-safe.
Can I install an indoor fireplace myself?
Bioethanol and water vapour fireplaces can typically be installed by a competent DIY-er to the manufacturer's instructions. Gas indoor fireplaces must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
