What to know before buying corten
How the patina forms
Corten arrives bright and mill-finished. Over the first few months outdoors it darkens through orange to a deep russet brown and then stabilises. Rain speeds the process up, a sheltered spot slows it down, and the finished colour varies slightly piece to piece, which is part of the material rather than a fault.
It will stain what sits underneath it
While the patina is forming, run-off carries iron oxide onto whatever the piece stands on. On gravel, grass or bare soil this does not matter. On pale porcelain paving, limestone or decking it leaves marks that are difficult to remove. Stand a new corten piece on gravel for its first season, or accept the mark.
Corten against stainless and lacquered steel
Corten is the choice when you want the fire pit to age into the garden. Stainless steel keeps a consistent bright finish and does not stain paving. Lacquered and black steel hold a flat, even colour but a chip left untreated will corrode from that point. None of the three is better outright, they age differently.
Also worth seeing: all fire pits, fire pit bowls, fire pit tables and the full corten steel range, which also covers outdoor fireplaces, log stores and a corten pizza oven.
