Collection: Corten Steel

Corten steel, also called weathering steel, is a high-strength alloy that forms a stable, rust-coloured patina when exposed to the weather. The patina protects the metal beneath rather than eating into it, which is why Corten is used for sculpture, bridges and high-end garden pieces that need to last decades outside.

Why Corten works so well in a British garden

British weather, with its rain, wind and freeze-thaw cycles, would corrode standard mild steel within a few seasons. Corten reacts differently. Over the first 6 to 18 months it develops a dense, warm orange-brown surface layer that locks itself shut, slowing further oxidation to a fraction of what plain steel would suffer. The colour deepens with age into a russet brown that sits beautifully against grass, gravel and planting.

What you can buy in Corten

Our Corten range covers fire pits, fire pit bowls, fire pit tables, outdoor fireplaces, water bowls, planters and accessories. Each piece carries the same naturally weathering steel finish, so they layer together in a garden scheme without looking mismatched.

Care, runoff and placement

Corten needs no painting, no waxing, no annual treatment. In the first few months of weathering, rainwater can carry a small amount of orange pigment onto pale paving, so we recommend placing a new Corten piece on gravel, grass or a darker stone, or using a drip tray for the initial weathering period. After 12 to 18 months the patina stabilises and the runoff stops.

What makes Fireside's Corten range different

We stock Corten pieces from Adezz, BonFeu, Moodz and Glamm Fire, every one made from genuine weathering steel rather than a painted lookalike. Free UK delivery and a manufacturer warranty are included. For a deeper read, see our guide to Corten steel.

Frequently asked questions

Does Corten steel actually rust through?

No, not in normal garden conditions. The patina that forms in the first 18 months stabilises and prevents further corrosion. Genuine Corten pieces routinely last 30 years or more outside.

Will Corten stain my paving?

It can during the first 6 to 12 months of weathering, while rainwater carries pigment from the developing patina. Once the patina is stable, runoff stops. Place new pieces on gravel, grass or use a drip tray for the first year if pale stone is a concern.

How thick is the Corten in your fire pits?

Most of the Corten fire pits we stock use 3 to 5mm steel, with some larger pieces in 8mm. Thicker steel resists warping in heat and lasts longer. Each product page lists the exact gauge.

Can I clean Corten with a pressure washer?

It is best avoided. The patina is hard but a high-pressure jet can disturb it. A soft brush and water is enough for general cleaning.
