Fire bowl or gas fire table: which should you choose?+
A bowl and a gas fire table do different jobs. A bowl sits low, radiates in every direction and can be repositioned, and it burns wood, so there is ash to clear and fuel to store. A gas fire table puts a flame in the middle of a surface you can also set a glass down on, lights instantly and leaves nothing to sweep out the morning after. Choose the bowl when you want people sitting around the fire itself; choose the table when the fire needs to share space with drinks and plates.
| Piece | Fuel | Format | Choose it when | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corten Steel Fire Bowl (this one) | Wood | Open bowl, 6 sizes | You want flame people can sit all the way around | £158.30 |
| Helios Square | Gas | Square table | Corner seating and no ash to clear | £1,729 |
| Vulcan Rectangle | Gas | Rectangular table | A long sofa or a run of dining chairs | £1,729 |
Is Corten, stainless or cast iron better for a fire pit bowl?+
Corten forms a stable rust-coloured oxide layer that protects the steel beneath and holds it for 20 to 30 years, which is what this bowl is built from, in 3mm Grade A plate. Brushed stainless instead holds its as-delivered finish with no patina and no transition period. Cast iron is the third option and behaves differently again: it is 2 to 3 times heavier than 3mm Corten, and that mass is the feature, holding residual warmth for 1 to 2 hours longer after the fire dies down than thinner-walled materials manage. The trade-off is upkeep, since cast iron rusts if left untreated and wants a coat of high-temperature stove paint each spring.
For a bowl left out year-round in a British garden, Corten is the low-maintenance default; choose cast iron instead if you want the heat to linger and will repaint it each spring, or stainless if the surrounding stone is pale. The catch with Corten is the first season: it bleeds orange run-off onto pale paving while it patinates, and on porous stone that can leave a permanent mark, so position it on darker slabs for the first summer. Our guide to Corten fire pit bowls compares the bowls we stock, the stainless guide is the sibling if you want the other finish, and the fire pit materials guide covers cast iron alongside both.
