The Moodz Classic in Corten steel has been our top-selling fire bowl two summers running. A Dutch-designed bowl in 3mm Corten weathering steel that arrives in raw silver-grey, develops its rich auburn patina across the first British year, and then holds. Built once, kept for a generation.
Hand-built by Moodz, the Dutch family-run maker, the Classic is a single-skin Corten bowl with the form refined over a decade of production. The 3mm wall (4mm at the 150cm size) gives serious thermal mass and a long expected life. The Corten patina is the protection: rain triggers oxidation across the surface, which then stabilises into the protective rust layer that defines a proper British garden in autumn.
Five diameters give you flexibility against the geometry of your garden. 60cm at £79.50 is the courtyard size. 80cm at £129 is the everyday choice. 100cm at £230 anchors a serious patio. 120cm at £285 is a statement piece. 150cm at £569 is for an open lawn or larger terrace. Classic (Corten) questions, answered
Can I use the Moodz Classic in a UK smoke control area?
Yes. It's a standalone outdoor appliance, and the Clean Air Act's smoke control rules only tighten for fires flued into a building - a summerhouse chimney, for example. Burn Ready to Burn certified, or otherwise well-seasoned and properly dried, logs and it's legal to use on any UK postcode, smoke control area or not. Excessive smoke from any fire can still count as a statutory nuisance if it genuinely bothers neighbours, so dry wood matters either way.
Do I need anything underneath the Moodz Classic?
Yes. Its single-foot base sits close to the ground, and a fire bowl runs hot underneath regardless - use a heat-resistant mat, paving slab or one of Moodz's own base frames if you're placing it on decking, grass or anything else you'd rather not scorch.
How is the Moodz Classic delivered, and will I need help placing it?
Free UK mainland delivery, next working day if you order before 12pm on a weekday. Weight depends on size: from 10.6 kg on the 60cm (one person can carry it into place without help.) up to 77 kg on the 150cm (plan on a three or four-person lift, or a hired trolley - this is not a two-person job.)
Will the Corten steel need any looking after?
Not really. It arrives raw silver-grey and develops its patina across the first British year outdoors, stabilising into a deep auburn-brown that doesn't rust through, so there's nothing to paint or seal.
Does rust from the Corten stain the paving underneath?
It can, especially in the first few months of weathering when rain carries a little rust runoff off the surface. If you have pale paving or decking, a plinth, gravel bed or heat mat underneath avoids staining as well as protecting the surface from heat.
What is the difference between the Moodz Classic (Corten) and Classic (Stainless)?
Same bowl and base design, same size range up to 120cm. Corten weathers into a rust patina over its first year outdoors; Stainless Steel keeps a silver finish permanently with no patina process, and costs more size-for-size - the 80cm is £129 on Corten against £242 on Stainless.
What is the difference between the Moodz Classic (Corten) and Feet & Handle (Corten)?
Same Corten finish and overlapping size range. This Classic has a single-foot base and no handles; the Feet & Handle version stands on three legs with two carry handles, making it easier to reposition, and costs a little more.
Who the Moodz Classic (Corten) is for
It is a good fit if:
- You want the classic rust-patina look and the widest size choice in the Moodz range, up to 150cm.
- You're setting it in one spot rather than moving it around regularly.
Consider something else if:
- You want to reposition it easily: the Feet & Handle version adds legs and carry handles.
- You'd rather avoid the weathering process and rust-runoff risk on pale paving: the Stainless Steel version keeps a permanent silver finish.
