Which wood fire pit format suits you?

Four main formats sit in this collection. Fire bowls (Moodz, BonFeu BonBowl) are the most common entry point: a heavy-gauge steel bowl that holds logs, throws warmth 360 degrees, and pairs with an optional grill insert for cooking. The Moodz Feet & Handle and BonFeu BonBowl are the classic British garden examples, in three sizes (60, 80 and 100 cm). Fire baskets (BonFeu BonVes) use a lifted basket silhouette that throws warmth at a higher level, useful when seating is high or when you want to protect the floor surface. Chimineas (Weather-it Steel Chiminea series) take the traditional Mexican chimney form, with a directional flame and chimney that vents smoke up rather than sideways, useful in tight terraces. Steel fire pits (Glamm Fire range) are premium designer pieces from Portugal, dual-fuel between wood and bioethanol, often with sculptural shapes.

Choose your size

A 60 cm bowl suits a two to four person small terrace. The 80 cm bowl is the standard four to six person size and the most popular spec in this collection. The 100 cm bowl is the entertaining size, comfortable for six to ten people seated around it. Chimineas are typically 1 to 1.5 metres tall and suit a terrace corner rather than a central position.

Materials and weathering

Corten weathering steel develops a stable rust patina over the first season and ages beautifully outdoors year-round. BonFeu, the Moodz Corten line and the Weather-it bodies all use corten. Stainless steel stays bright with no rust, which is the Moodz Stainless option. Powder-coated mild steel offers a protective coating but will rust if the coating is scratched, a more affordable choice (Weather-it Chimineas). Cast iron is traditional, retains heat well, and requires more maintenance to keep rust at bay.

If your fire pit is going on decking, composite decking, grass or any other heat-sensitive surface, use a heat-resistant fire pit mat or paving stone underneath. Open wood fires can throw embers and the base itself can radiate enough heat to mark soft surfaces over time. Most premium bowls in this collection sit on three or four short legs, which helps, but a base mat is still recommended.

UK Smoke Control Areas and DEFRA approval

Many UK towns and cities are designated Smoke Control Areas under the Clean Air Act 1993. In these areas you can only burn DEFRA-approved fuels in DEFRA-approved appliances. Most open wood fire pits and bowls are not DEFRA approved by design, so they are intended for use either in gardens outside Smoke Control Areas, or with smokeless fuel such as kiln-dried hardwood briquettes and Ecoal, which produce minimal smoke. If you live in a London borough or another Smoke Control Area, check the local council's requirements before purchase. We can advise on specific models if you give us your postcode.

Wood, kindling and storage

Hardwoods (oak, ash, birch, beech) burn slowly and produce good heat. Softwoods (pine, fir) burn fast and produce more smoke. Kiln-dried logs at under 20% moisture burn the cleanest. Several brands in this collection sell matching wood-storage cabinets (BonFeu and Weather-it especially) so you can buy storage and fire pit as a coordinated set rather than mixing brands.

Cooking function

Many wood fire pits double as outdoor cooking vessels. The Moodz 80 cm bowl with grill insert turns into a primary entertaining piece. The BonFeu BonBowl Plus has a similar grill add-on. The BonFeu BonVes fire basket can be paired with a grill grate. If you want a dedicated combined fire-pit-and-grill product rather than an add-on, browse our Fire Pits With Grills collection.
