3 materials genuinely resist rust in a British garden: Corten steel, cast aluminium, and marine-grade stainless. Of these, Corten is the one most buyers misread as faulty , the orange surface is not rust damage, it is a stable protective patina. Cast aluminium and stainless do not corrode at all. Corten steel: the orange patina that prevents rust, not causes it
Corten (weathering steel) is misunderstood because it looks rusty. It is not. The orange surface layer is a dense, self-sealing oxide , chemically distinct from the porous rust that destroys mild steel. Once the patina establishes in 3 to 6 months of wet-dry UK cycles, it stops progressing entirely. The steel beneath is unchanged and protected. The practical catch: during that first season, Corten bleeds orange streaks onto paving. On slate, gravel, or dark stone this washes off. After that first season, no maintenance is required.

For most domestic garden settings, stainless reads slightly clinical compared with the organic warmth of Corten. Why powder-coated mild steel fails within five winters
The majority of fire pits sold at garden centres are mild steel with a powder-coat or high-temperature paint finish. They look similar to Corten at point of sale. The difference appears in year three. Heat cycles from the fire micro-expand and contract the metal, degrading the coating's adhesion. Once a pinhole forms, moisture reaches the bare steel underneath. Rust progresses outward under the coating, lifting it in patches. You can touch it up, but the underlying deterioration continues.
A £200 powder-coated fire pit from a supermarket chain is unlikely to reach its fifth outdoor winter. A £99 BonBowl in Corten will outlast your garden furniture. That gap is the honest case for spending more on the material rather than the finish.

Check the specification for the word "weathering steel" or "Cor-Ten" , that is Corten. If the spec says "steel" with a powder-coat description, assume mild steel. Price is a reasonable proxy: genuine Corten pieces rarely sell for under £80. Most items under £60 are mild steel with a finish that will fail.
Caring for a rust-resistant fire pit through a UK winter
For Corten: nothing required. Leave it out, no cover needed. One useful step regardless of material: empty ash before extended rain. Wet ash is mildly alkaline and corrosive, even on Corten. A quick empty after the last fire of the autumn costs 5 minutes and meaningfully extends the burner components and grate.
For cast aluminium: an annual wipe with a damp cloth and a silicone-based protector maintains the powder-coat and prevents surface chalking. Ten minutes, once a year.

Is Corten steel safe for cooking over?
