Best Rust-Proof Fire Pits for UK Gardens 2026: A Material-First Guide

3 materials genuinely resist rust in a British garden: Corten steel, cast aluminium, and marine-grade stainless. Of these, Corten is the one most buyers misread as faulty , the orange surface is not rust damage, it is a stable protective patina. Cast aluminium and stainless do not corrode at all. Every other common fire pit material will eventually fail outdoors in the UK.

We have been selling outdoor fire pits for a while now. The single most common complaint we hear from customers who bought elsewhere is that their fire pit rusted through within two winters. Every one of those pieces was powder-coated mild steel. Here is what actually holds up , and why.

Corten steel: the orange patina that prevents rust, not causes it

Corten (weathering steel) is misunderstood because it looks rusty. It is not. The orange surface layer is a dense, self-sealing oxide , chemically distinct from the porous rust that destroys mild steel. Once the patina establishes in 3 to 6 months of wet-dry UK cycles, it stops progressing entirely. The steel beneath is unchanged and protected. A BonFeu BonBowl in Corten left outdoors for 10 years looks exactly the same as one left for two.

The practical catch: during that first season, Corten bleeds orange streaks onto paving. On slate, gravel, or dark stone this washes off. On Indian sandstone or buff concrete it can leave a permanent mark. Position the fire pit on darker paving for the first summer, or use a silicone mat underneath. After that first season, no maintenance is required.

The BonFeu BonBowl (from £99, Dutch-made, 60–100cm) is the most straightforward entry point. The BonBowl Plus (from £124) adds a cooking grate and deeper sides for longer burns.

Cast aluminium: zero rust, lightweight, year-round

Aluminium does not rust. The material oxidises on its surface , a thin film that is protective, not progressive , and otherwise stays unchanged in British outdoor conditions. Cast aluminium fire pits are notably lighter than steel equivalents, which matters if you want to move the piece seasonally or rearrange a garden scheme.

In our range, cast aluminium features most prominently in the Moodz Sphere , a contemporary round bowl in matte black or anthracite. Moodz is a Dutch brand we stock because the powder-coat consistency holds well across UK winters without the chalking or fading that appears on cheaper aluminium pieces. If your garden scheme is angular and dark and Corten's warm orange tones would clash, Moodz is the piece we point customers toward first.

Stainless steel: where it fits (and where it does not)

Marine-grade (316) stainless steel genuinely does not corrode. It stays bright silver, shows fingerprints, and requires occasional polishing to stay looking clean. That suits contemporary gardens where the fire pit is part of a scheme with stainless outdoor kitchens, chrome furniture, or very clean modern planting.

For most domestic garden settings, stainless reads slightly clinical compared with the organic warmth of Corten. We carry more stainless in our heater and outdoor kitchen range than in fire pits specifically, because the material suits those categories better. If stainless is a firm requirement for your fire pit, speak to us , we can advise on what is currently in stock.

Why powder-coated mild steel fails within five winters

The majority of fire pits sold at garden centres are mild steel with a powder-coat or high-temperature paint finish. They look similar to Corten at point of sale. The difference appears in year three. Heat cycles from the fire micro-expand and contract the metal, degrading the coating's adhesion. Once a pinhole forms, moisture reaches the bare steel underneath. Rust progresses outward under the coating, lifting it in patches. You can touch it up, but the underlying deterioration continues.

A £200 powder-coated fire pit from a supermarket chain is unlikely to reach its fifth outdoor winter. A £99 BonBowl in Corten will outlast your garden furniture. That gap is the honest case for spending more on the material rather than the finish.

Best rust-resistant fire pits for UK gardens 2026

BonFeu BonBowl , from £99. Corten steel, three diameter options (60, 80, 100cm), made in the Netherlands. The 80cm is the most popular for a standard patio. Leaves no maintenance requirements after year one.

BonFeu BonBowl Plus , from £124. Adds a cooking grate and a taller bowl to the base BonBowl. Good if you want to grill occasionally as well as sit around the fire.

BonFeu BonCarré , from £219. Square-form Corten outdoor fireplace. Taller profile than a bowl; contains the fire more fully and throws less smoke sideways. Suits corner-of-patio positioning.

BonFeu BonGiro , from £249. 360-degree rotating Corten fireplace. The rotation lets you direct the flame toward the seating or shield it from wind without moving the whole piece , the detail that makes it worth the step up from the BonCarré.

Moodz Sphere. Cast aluminium. Contemporary round bowl, matte black or anthracite, Dutch-made. The piece we recommend when Corten's warm tones would clash with the garden scheme.

How to spot mild steel before you buy

Check the specification for the word "weathering steel" or "Cor-Ten" , that is Corten. If the spec says "steel" with a powder-coat description, assume mild steel. Price is a reasonable proxy: genuine Corten pieces rarely sell for under £80. Most items under £60 are mild steel with a finish that will fail.

Caring for a rust-resistant fire pit through a UK winter

For Corten: nothing required. Leave it out, no cover needed. One useful step regardless of material: empty ash before extended rain. Wet ash is mildly alkaline and corrosive, even on Corten. A quick empty after the last fire of the autumn costs 5 minutes and meaningfully extends the burner components and grate.

For cast aluminium: an annual wipe with a damp cloth and a silicone-based protector maintains the powder-coat and prevents surface chalking. Ten minutes, once a year.

FAQ

Is Corten steel safe for cooking over?

Yes. The Corten oxide layer is chemically inert at cooking temperatures. The BonBowl Plus includes a cooking grate for exactly this reason. The alloy components , chromium, copper, nickel , are present in trace quantities and present no food-safety concern different from a cast-iron pan.

Will a Corten fire pit stain my patio?

Yes, in the first 3 to 6 months while the patina is forming. Orange run-off onto porous or pale paving is normal. On sealed stone, slate, or gravel it washes off. On Indian sandstone or buff concrete it can leave a permanent mark. Position on darker paving for the first season or use a mat beneath.

Can I leave any fire pit outside year-round in the UK?

Corten: yes, without question. Cast aluminium: yes. Powder-coated mild steel: a fitted cover during extended wet periods extends the coating's life significantly, but the underlying material will still deteriorate faster than Corten or aluminium regardless.

How do I tell mild steel from Corten?

Check the spec for "weathering steel" or "Cor-Ten". "Steel" with a powder-coat description means mild steel. Genuine Corten rarely sells for under £80 , most items under £60 are mild steel. Price is a reliable proxy when the spec is vague.

Does stainless steel last longer than Corten?

Both are long-term materials when correctly specified , 20-plus years is realistic for either. Stainless will not patina; Corten will. For a UK garden, the choice between them is largely aesthetic. Stainless suits contemporary, silver-and-grey schemes; Corten suits warm, organic, naturalistic ones.
