The BonFeu BonVes 45 does both with a piece of design quietly inspired by a vintage washing-machine drum: a 45cm perforated-steel basket that radiates heat through every panel and looks considered enough to stay out on the patio year-round.
Built by BonFeu, the Dutch family-run maker, the BonVes is offered in black coated steel or unfinished Corten steel that weathers into a deep auburn patina over the first twelve months. The perforated walls let warmth radiate in every direction and let you see the flames from any seat around the pit. Does the BonVes 45 need a chimney or flue?
No. Unlike our BonFeu garden fireplaces, it's an open fire basket with no stove pipe at all - just a freestanding frame you light logs in directly.
Can I use the BonVes 45 in a UK smoke control area?
Yes. It's a standalone outdoor appliance, and the Clean Air Act's smoke control rules only tighten for fires flued into a building - a summerhouse chimney, for example. Burn Ready to Burn certified, or otherwise well-seasoned and properly dried, logs and it's legal to use on any UK postcode, smoke control area or not. Excessive smoke from any fire can still count as a statutory nuisance if it genuinely bothers neighbours, so dry wood matters either way.
Do I need anything underneath the BonVes 45?
Yes. Even standing on its own legs at 100cm, an open fire basket runs hot underneath - use a heat-resistant mat or a paving slab if you're placing it on decking, grass or anything else you'd rather not scorch.
How is the BonVes 45 delivered, and will I need help placing it?
Free UK mainland delivery, next working day if you order before 12pm on a weekday. It arrives on a pallet at 13.1kg, 45 × 45cm across. One person can carry it into place without help.
Will the finish on the BonVes 45 need any looking after?
Depends which you choose. Corten Steel arrives raw silver-grey and starts to rust within a few weeks outdoors; the patina matures over roughly 6 to 12 months into a stable, deep rust-brown that doesn't rust through. Black Steel carries a heat-resistant coating that, like the Corten, also weathers and develops a rustic character of its own over time.
Fire pit or outdoor fireplace: which is better for a UK garden?
An outdoor fireplace and a fire pit are not interchangeable. The BonVes 45 is the fire pit side of that choice: it sits low and open with no flue, radiating heat in every direction so people can sit all the way round it. An outdoor fireplace instead stands upright with a stove pipe, throwing heat forward from a single opening. Choose a fire pit when the fire itself should be the centre of the circle, not to one side of it.
Who the BonVes 45 is for
It is a good fit if:
- You want an open fire basket you can also grill on - it comes with a grill grid and a middle plate, not just a poker.
- You want it standing at a taller, more upright height (100cm) rather than sitting low like a bowl.
