Which finish, and who it suits
Choose corten if you want the fireplace to weather into the garden and settle to a rust-brown patina. Choose black steel if you would rather it held an even colour, keeping in mind that a chip left untreated will corrode from that point, so touch up any damage.
At medium size the BonCarré suits a patio seating four to six on one side. Because the heat comes forward rather than all round, it works where seating faces the fire and works poorly where it wraps around it. If your chairs form a circle, a fire pit is the better shape.

Does the BonCarré need a chimney or professional installation?
No. It's a self-contained wood-burning fireplace with its own built-in 10 cm stove pipe, so it vents itself with nothing connected to your house. It stands freestanding on its own legs, and there's no flue installation of any kind.
Can I use the BonCarré in a UK smoke control area?
Yes. It's a standalone outdoor appliance, and the Clean Air Act's smoke control rules only tighten for fires flued into a building - a summerhouse chimney, for example. Burn Ready to Burn certified, or otherwise well-seasoned and properly dried, logs and it's legal to use on any UK postcode, smoke control area or not. Excessive smoke from any fire can still count as a statutory nuisance if it genuinely bothers neighbours, so dry wood matters either way.
How is the BonCarré delivered, and will I need help placing it?
Free UK mainland delivery, next working day if you order before 12pm on a weekday. It arrives on a pallet at 18.1kg, 35 × 35cm across. One person can carry it into place without help.
Will the finish on the BonCarré need any looking after?
Depends which you choose. Corten Steel arrives raw silver-grey and starts to rust within a few weeks outdoors; the patina matures over roughly 6 to 12 months into a stable, deep rust-brown that doesn't rust through. Black Steel carries a heat-resistant coating that, like the Corten, also weathers and develops a rustic character of its own over time.
What is the difference between the BonCarré and the BonTino?
They share the same 35 × 35cm footprint, 164cm height and included accessories, at a near-identical price (BonCarré £219.50, BonTino £219.95). The BonCarré is square; the BonTino is round. Pick on shape.
Outdoor fireplace or fire pit: which is better for a UK garden?
An outdoor fireplace and a fire pit are not interchangeable. The BonCarré is the fireplace side of that choice: its built-in stove pipe draws smoke up and away and throws heat forward from one opening, making it a focal point against a wall or at the end of a terrace. A fire pit sits low and open, radiating heat in every direction instead. Choose a fireplace when the seating faces one way and smoke drifting across the table is what you want to avoid.
Who the BonCarré is for
It is a good fit if:
- You want straight lines rather than a round drum shape - it pairs better with square or rectangular garden furniture.
- You still want a genuine cooking fireplace: the wok ring and lid are included, not sold as an extra.
Consider something else if:
- You'd prefer the round silhouette instead: the BonTino has the same footprint and height, at a near-identical price.
- At 18.1 kg it's the heaviest of the three similarly-sized models (BonTino, BonCarré, BonBono); the square body needs more material than the round ones.
