Which finish, and who it suits

Choose corten if you want the fireplace to weather into the garden and settle to a rust-brown patina. Choose black steel if you would rather it held an even colour, keeping in mind that a chip left untreated will corrode from that point, so touch up any damage.

At medium size the BonCarré suits a patio seating four to six on one side. Because the heat comes forward rather than all round, it works where seating faces the fire and works poorly where it wraps around it. If your chairs form a circle, a fire pit is the better shape.
